MY FRIEND OPENED HER NEW BUSINESS

You will see people supporting celebrities who do not know they even exist. There are people who will claim they are your friends but they won’t support your work when you actually need them to. Whenever some friend of mine starts a new venture I make sure I support them as much as possible, sharing their stuff online and promoting their works wherever I can. One of the main reasons why I do that is because I myself had a tough time advertising my writing when I first began. Therefore, it is one thing to be trying to set business up and then meet circumstances wherein the expected support does not show up. Also, it is not uncommon that strangers online will support you more than the ones who have counted on.

The point of this article is not to highlight the misgivings of friendship or connections. One of my dearest friends from college has started her new venture, Ratan Yagom, as she is known, she has the talent of ten artisans if I have to be precise. From watching her have a tough time in college with a course that probably had no interest from her end, she surely came far enough to begin a new designer label. She was always talented and I have never doubted her skills, if I really have to be honest with you.

Hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, her journey to this particular moment came with a few challenges along the path. I think one of the traits I admire of those who may not be academically aligned as the rest, is the fact that they are supremely adept in turning their weaknesses into strengths. You will always find something to admire in them, because that kind of talent is hard to miss. If you go through her creations, you will realise the magnitude of love she has poured into each one of them. I am not talking about the precision here, it is the imagination put to work that produced such marvelous results.

The reality about those who seem to enjoy this part of artistry, which is draping, designing, tailoring, customising and the like is that they have gone through endless periods of trials and errors with their own creations, probably mocked at for their repeated attempts and maintaining their momentum as much as possible. And that is what creates finesse in their craft. Because if you were to dedicate that amount of time and energy to perfect something, the creation is nothing less than exemplary.

Ratan’s expertise is one of the few quirky ones I have seen in recent times. It appears pure from the upstart, colourful and takes you straight back to those days when life was less complicated, the phases where childhood remained a thing for the children without adulteration. Her creative streak wasn’t a surprise for many of us who know her personally because it was apparent from her fashion sense that was always the talk of the campus. Everything was worth- watching as she passed through corridors.
